Forensic Electrical Technician
Position Summary
Fire Research \& Technology (FRT) is seeking an experienced Forensic Electrical Technician to join our growing team of forensic experts. This position is ideal for a highly skilled electrician who enjoys solving complex problems and applying technical knowledge to determine the cause of electrical failures, fires, and equipment malfunctions.
Working alongside Certified Fire Investigators, Engineers, and laboratory personnel, the successful candidate will conduct field investigations, examine electrical components, document findings, and prepare clear, defensible reports for insurance companies, attorneys, manufacturers, and commercial clients.
Primary Responsibilities
- Conduct forensic examinations of residential, commercial, and industrial electrical systems.
- Investigate electrical failures associated with fires, equipment malfunctions, and property losses.
- Inspect wiring methods, service equipment, branch circuits, motors, controls, and electrical devices.
- Evaluate electrical installations for compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and applicable local codes.
- Assist with laboratory testing and evidence examinations.
- Photograph, document, and preserve evidence following established forensic procedures.
- Prepare detailed written reports that clearly explain observations, testing, conclusions, and opinions.
- Work collaboratively with Fire Investigators and Forensic Engineers on complex losses.
- Travel throughout the region and occasionally nationwide to perform field investigations.
- Testify as a fact witness or expert witness when required.
Required Qualifications
- Master Electrician license preferred.
- Extensive experience performing residential and commercial electrical installations and troubleshooting.
- Strong working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC).
- Experience reading electrical drawings, schematics, and one-line diagrams.
- Excellent technical writing and communication skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and standard computer applications.
- Valid driver's license with the ability to travel.
- Ability to lift and move evidence and work in post-fire environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Construction Management, Fire Protection, or a related technical discipline is a plus
- Associate degree with significant industry experience will also be considered.
- Previous experience in forensic investigations, insurance claims, or failure analysis.
- Fire investigation certifications (IAAI, NAFI, NFPA) are a plus.
- OSHA safety training and experience working on commercial construction projects.
