This Opportunity:

We are partnering with Kenowa Hills Public Schools in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Kenowa Hills Public Schools is seeking a qualified maternity leave High School Counselor to support students in academic achievement, career exploration, postsecondary planning, and social-emotional development. The High School Counselor plays a vital role in ensuring students meet graduation requirements while preparing for college, career, military, or workforce pathways. This position collaborates closely with students, families, staff, and community partners to promote student success and equitable access to opportunities.

  • Monday-Friday
  • 7:30am-3:30pm
  • $44/hr
  • Dates: May10th-June 5th

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Academic Planning \& Graduation Compliance

  • Assist students with academic planning and course selection aligned with Michigan Merit Curriculum and board-approved graduation requirements.
  • Monitor student credit attainment and conduct graduation audits.
  • Support development and maintenance of the master schedule in collaboration with administration.
  • Review transcripts and ensure accurate documentation of student academic records.

Postsecondary Planning

  • Provide guidance related to college admissions, skilled trades, military pathways, and workforce entry.
  • Assist students and families with FAFSA completion and scholarship applications.
  • Coordinate career exploration activities aligned with the Michigan Career Development Model.
  • Facilitate college and career readiness programming, including testing coordination when applicable.

Student Support \& Counseling

  • Provide individual and small-group counseling focused on academic, career, and social-emotional development.
  • Respond to student crises and safety concerns in accordance with state law and district policy.
  • Serve as a mandated reporter and comply with all child protection requirements.
  • Support student transitions, including enrollment, withdrawal, and alternative pathways.

Collaboration \& Compliance

  • Participate in MTSS, 504, and student support meetings.
  • Facilitate 504 meetings and oversee compliance with Section 504 requirements.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential student records in compliance with FERPA and district policy.
  • Consult with teachers, administrators, and families regarding student progress and interventions.
  • Coordinate referrals to community agencies and outside service providers when appropriate.

School Climate \& Leadership

  • Promote restorative practices and positive school climate initiatives.
  • Participate in professional learning communities and school improvement efforts.
  • Provide staff consultation related to student mental health and support strategies.
  • Contribute to initiatives supporting diversity, equity, and inclusive practices.

Must Haves:

  • Valid Michigan School Counselor License (NT endorsement or School Counselor License required).
  • Knowledge of Michigan Merit Curriculum and high school graduation requirements.
  • Familiarity with postsecondary admissions processes, FAFSA completion, scholarships, and financial aid systems.
  • Experience with Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) and student intervention frameworks preferred.
  • Knowledge of Section 504 compliance requirements.
  • Experience with restorative practices preferred.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive practices.
  • Strong understanding of FERPA and student confidentiality requirements.
  • Effective communication, collaboration, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
