Adjunct:

Rate or rates of pay: $1,020 per credit for undergraduate courses; $1,112 per credit for undergraduate courses after 40 credits are taught within a five-year period; $1,352 per credit for graduate courses. Any future updates to per credit rates of pay will be reflected within the electronic contract.

The Adventure Education and Outdoor Leadership program at The College of St. Scholastica invites applications for adjunct faculty to teach courses within the Adventure Education and Outdoor Leadership minor. This position supports experiential, field-based learning focused on outdoor leadership, environmental stewardship, and technical outdoor skills.

Job Summary

Adjunct instructors will teach courses that may include topics such as outdoor leadership, wilderness skills, expedition planning, risk management, environmental education, and technical outdoor activities (e.g., canoeing, climbing, mountain biking, or sea kayaking). Courses may include classroom instruction, skills labs, and field-based learning experiences.

esponsibilities**

  • Teach assigned undergraduate courses in the Adventure Education and Outdoor Leadership minor.
  • Facilitate experiential learning through classroom instruction, skill development, and outdoor field experiences.
  • Promote safe, inclusive learning environments while implementing sound risk-management practices during outdoor activities.
  • Evaluate student performance and provide timely feedback on assignments and skill development.
  • Maintain course materials and learning modules within the college’s learning management system.
  • Coordinate logistics for field-based instruction when applicable.
  • Support the mission and values of The College of St. Scholastica.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in outdoor education, recreation, environmental studies, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience leading outdoor education programs or expedition-based learning.
  • Technical proficiency in one or more outdoor activities (e.g., paddlesports, climbing, mountain biking, backpacking, wilderness travel).
  • Commitment to safety, inclusion, and student-centered experiential learning.
  • Certification in First Aid and CPR/AED
  • Experience with the development of risk management and Emergency Action Plans with key stakeholders within the college
  • Ability to engage with and welcome students from a wide diversity of backgrounds and abilities
  • Valid U.S. Driver’s license and meet St. Scholastica’s requirements for use of college vehicles, including 15-passenger van certification and trailer use/operation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in outdoor education, recreation, leadership, or related field.
  • Relevant certifications such as paddlesports or climbing instructor certifications, Leave No Trace trainer, or similar credentials.
  • Experience teaching or mentoring college-age students.
  • Experience facilitating field-based or expedition-style learning.
  • Wilderness First Responder Certification

Additional Information

Courses may include on-campus instruction as well as required field experiences on weekends or during extended outdoor trips. Adjunct faculty are hired on a per-course basis and may teach one or more courses per semester, depending on program needs.
