SUMMARY
Responsible for ensuring compliance with evolving laws and regulations pertaining to privacy and AI. Advising Alliant corporate departments and business groups on a broad range of privacy and security issues, and managing outside counsel when needed. Collaborates with senior department leadership to oversee the progress of legal department initiatives, development of team processes, procedures, and practices, as well as policies, processes, and procedures for the company. Assists with supervising, mentoring, and training attorneys and other legal team members in specific areas of focus.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Develops and maintains subject matter expertise in areas of data use and protection laws (including state and privacy laws, AI regulations, consumer protection laws, HIPAA, GDPR, and other global privacy laws).
Provides leadership and guidance on complex legal matters and anticipates, mitigates, and advises on potential privacy issues across corporate groups, client engagements, and third-party relationships.
Supports the data privacy and compliance team on implementing measures necessary to comply with applicable data privacy laws, including assisting with data mapping efforts, reviewing Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs/DPIAs), and advising on security incidents or data breaches.
Supports merger and acquisition activities relating to privacy and security, including due diligence and integration efforts.
Leads and oversees a variety of legal initiatives, projects, and/or functions, serving as a subject matter expert and the primary trusted partner for such initiatives/projects/functions at the direction of senior department leadership.
Advises on data privacy, legal risk identification, and mitigation efforts, including implementing privacy-by-design principles.
Serves as a resource to members of the legal, data privacy, compliance, IT, and business teams on privacy matters, including regulatory inquiries, certification requirements, compliance efforts, acquisitions, integrations, and business development opportunities.
Elevates privacy matters and problems to senior department leadership, as appropriate, for feedback on proposed solutions and next steps, and partners with senior department leadership to elevate to company leadership as appropriate.
Participates in the supervision, mentoring, work allocation, and training of senior associate attorneys, associate attorneys, and support staff (as applicable), including assisting with the recruiting, onboarding, and work allocation of such team members.
Partners with multi-functional transactional teams, including corporate and business operations, marketing, IT, vendor compliance and governance, and human resources, on privacy policies and procedures in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Partners with other internal attorneys and legal operations to create, refine, and update contract templates and other forms.
Helps develop and conduct general and role-specific privacy trainings and presentations to employees, corporate groups, and management.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
Law School Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school, required
Seven (7) or more years of related work experience, required
Member in good standing of at least one State Bar or the District of Columbia Bar, required
Experience in effectively preparing, drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts with minimum supervision, required
Experience advising on domestic and global privacy laws, regulations, and frameworks, required
Five (5) or more years of privacy or product counseling experience, ideally with both in-house and law firm exposure, required
Experience supporting employee benefits and advising on ERISA and HIPAA/privacy compliance, preferred
CIPP/US or CIPP/E Certification, preferred
SKILLS
Excellent verbal and written communication skills (ability to be clear and persuasive, orally and in writing)
Excellent planning, organizational, and prioritization skills, including the ability to multitask on multiple high-priority projects
Ability to give legal guidance in a practical, business-oriented manner to non-lawyer company representatives in order to help reach solutions
Ability to lead and mentor staff
Advanced analytical, problem-solving, and time management skills
Demonstrated business acumen with the ability to inspire trust and confidence with senior management
Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to adapt skills based on context and environment
