About VPMMA

The Veteran Project Manager Mentor Alliance (VPMMA) is a 100% volunteer-driven 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering, equipping, and advancing the careers of service members, veterans, and military spouses to achieve project management career greatness. Through mentorship, networking, and professional development, VPMMA builds a robust, supportive community that champions the transformative power of project management skills. Committed to fostering an environment of equal opportunity and zero harassment, the organization requires volunteers to maintain confidentiality, participate in performance evaluations, and comply with all applicable laws.

Role Overview

As the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Chair of the Finance Committee, this individual serves as the chief financial strategist for the Veteran Project Manager Mentor Alliance (VPMMA), safeguarding the organization's fiscal health through high-level oversight and visionary governance. This role is strictly defined by strategic direction and leadership, allowing this individual to maintain a manageable commitment by delegating tactical, execution-heavy tasks to your direct reports. By collaborating closely with the executive team on funding strategies and maintaining rigorous organizational compliance, one ensures that the VPMMA has the robust resources and fiscal integrity necessary to serve the veteran community long term.

Key Responsibilities

  • High-Level Oversight: Supervise the Treasurer and Comptroller, providing strategic direction while they manage operational tasks like daily bookkeeping, account reconciliations, and transactional execution.
  • Directorate Leadership: Serve as the Committee Chair for the Growth and Development Directorate, steering the overarching funding strategy and high-level revenue planning without managing individual fundraising tasks.
  • Financial Strategy \& Governance: Lead high-level financial planning, risk management, and analysis. You will chair the Finance Committee and serve as a vital member of the Executive Team, advising on policies that align with VPMMA's long-term growth.
  • CFO-Level Advisory: Provide strategic counsel to the Board of Directors on the optimization of charitable contributions, cash flow management, and the financial implications of new initiatives. This responsibility includes advising on the sustainable allocation of donor funds and ensuring diverse revenue streams align with the organization's long-term growth.
  • Reporting \& Compliance: Oversee the integrity of financial reporting and adherence to accounting standards; review the annual tax filing and the annual financial report prepared by the financial team before stakeholder submission.
  • Operational Oversight: Coordinate the annual audit process and provide financial oversight for scholarship awards and donor/sponsorship finances in collaboration with the Scholarship and Growth Committees.
  • Fiscal Leadership: Establish and manage high-level reimbursement processes and payment authorizations while facilitating financial literacy among board members.

Skills \& Qualifications

  • Financial Expertise: Proven experience in financial management or accounting, ideally within a nonprofit (501c3) framework.
  • Strategic Leadership: Strong experience in chairing committees, driving funding strategies, and the ability to supervise and delegate tactical tasks effectively to maintain the targeted monthly commitment.
  • Communication Excellence: The ability to translate complex financial data into clear, actionable insights for non-financial stakeholders.
  • Technical Proficiency: Experience with cloud-based accounting systems (e.g., QuickBooks) and financial collaboration tools.
  • Integrity \& Eligibility: Must be a U.S. citizen (including naturalized) and pass a legal background check to handle financial responsibilities.
  • Mission Alignment: A strong passion for supporting military veterans, service members, and military spouses.

Volunteer Benefits

  • Professional Development: Upskill and gain hands-on experience in nonprofit fundraising, strategic growth, and grant portfolio management to boost your resume.
  • Coursera Access: Complimentary professional development access to Google Certificates on Coursera.
  • Recognition \& Rewards: Eligibility for our Volunteer of the Month/Year awards, appreciation events, and formal letters of recommendation from staff leadership.
  • Networking Opportunities: Connect with a dedicated, nationwide community of project management professionals, corporate partners, and veteran advocates.
  • Fulfillment: Make a direct, measurable impact on the lives of transitioning service members and their families during critical life transitions.
