Location

  • This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person work at North Campus Edmonton.

The Database Administrator is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining databases and associated front-end applications to support the department’s operational, educational, and clinical initiatives. The position works closely with team leads and staff across multiple functional areas to assess needs, map workflows, and implement tailored solutions that enhance data collection, reporting, and accessibility.

We are seeking an individual who can facilitate the movement of data and develop the infrastructure to support quality improvement projects in Family Medical Clinics to support the Department of Family Medicine’s Academic Clinical Services and Research initiatives.

Responsibilities

Full-Stack Database Design \& Development (30%)

  • Designs and develops scalable software solutions, including back-end database structures and front-end interfaces tailored to departmental needs.
  • Builds and iterates on user-friendly front-end applications to facilitate efficient staff interaction with complex data systems.

Needs Assessment \& Collaboration (40%)

  • Work with team leads and members to understand requirements, processes, and desired outcomes.
  • Translate functional requirements into technical specifications.

Project Support \& Implementation (20%)

  • Develop and maintain project plans and timelines to ensure timely project delivery.

Maintenance \& Continuous Improvement (10%)

  • Monitor database performance and optimize as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Management, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in basic software development, database design, development, and administration.
  • Proficiency in common programming and development languages (e.g., SQL, Python, R, JavaScript, etc.).
  • Experience creating user-friendly front-end applications or interfaces for databases.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to translate user needs into technical solutions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with diverse teams.

Preferred

  • Experience working in healthcare, education, or research environments, and family medical clinic data and workflow experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of health informatics, data privacy, and security standards.
  • Familiarity with workflow automation tools and reporting dashboards (e.g., Power BI, Tableau).
  • Experience supporting HR, operations, or academic program administration through database solutions.
  • Experience with SQL Server and .NET framework.

This position is subject to all applicable terms and conditions of the collective agreement between the Governors of the University of Alberta and the Non-Academic Staff Association (NASA).
