Job Title:

Junior Data Scientist

Location:

Greenford (Hybrid – 3 days in the office)

Reports to:

Head of Data \& Analytics

About Us:

Brompton Bicycle is a leading producer of folding bicycles, renowned for our commitment to quality and innovation. Our mission is to revolutionise urban living and ensure the finest experience for our customers. To aid this, we have assembled a Data \& Analytics team and are on the lookout for a skilled Junior Data Scientist to join our ranks.

Job Overview:

In this role, you will be a key player in the application of data science, statistical and machine learning techniques on Brompton’s burgeoning data lakehouse, to answer key business questions from across the organisation.

You will be working with diverse data sets sourced from multiple systems, analysing them using an array of techniques, for our business to derive valuable insights. This process will encompass everything from the exploratory data analysis, application of data visualisation techniques, to deciding what machine learning methodology to apply, all through coding in our cloud platform, Azure Databricks.

A significant aspect of your role will be addressing inefficiencies within the organisation, using your skills to drive automation through coding, reducing the reliance on manual data entry and the time your stakeholders spend on pulling data together.

As a vital part of our team, you will collaborate with diverse departments across our organisation, ensuring that the data solutions you provide align with the business needs. Your work will directly support the creation of data-driven strategies that will yield pivotal insights, bolstering decision making and strategic planning. Within the Data \& Analytics team, you’ll work closely with the Data/Analytics Engineers, ensuring that the data is provided to you from the right source, in the correct format.

You will have the chance to contribute directly to our mission of revolutionising urban living, by ensuring that our data science practices are as insightful and relevant as possible.

Responsibilities:

  • Query, transform and apply the appropriate business rules to our data, from various sources, in preparation for analysis
  • Undertake exploratory data analysis (EDA) to dictate the direction of analysis, ensuring data quality lies at the heart of everything we do
  • Choose the appropriate statistical, data science or machine learning techniques corresponding to the completeness and format of the data, articulating the pros and cons of each approach.
  • Develop, train and monitor predictive models to solve real-world business problems, working with clean and messy data alike.
  • Link the findings back to the business objectives, demonstrating the ability to not just show technical acumen, but business knowledge (analytics to insight), tracking the outcome to ensure the insight and efficiency has delivered quantifiable business impact
  • Work with the Data and Analytics team to establish priorities for data ingestion, in line with the most pressing business objectives
  • Partner cross-functionally with the Head of Data and Analytics, maintaining relationships with key stakeholders across Commercial, Finance, Planning etc.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in maths, data science, statistics or equivalent experience
  • 1-3 years of experience in data science/statistics related role
  • Proficiency with SQL, Python and R, with knowledge on how to transform, analyse and present data in a compelling way
  • Understanding of how and when to apply basic statistical concepts (linear and non-linear regression, ANOVA, time series analysis, forecasting, imputation etc.)
  • Understanding of core machine learning concepts, including supervised/unsupervised learning, model evaluation techniques (e.g., cross-validation, confusion matrix, ROC-AUC) and techniques (xgboost, support vector machines, random forests etc.) along with hands-on experience in model training, validation, and prediction tasks using real-world datasets.
  • Ability to articulate the shortcomings of any analysis based on the level of data quality, acknowledging the connection between data quality and robust insights
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Curiosity-driven mindset with a willingness to explore new techniques and proactively contribute ideas to improve data workflows.

Desirable Skills:

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience with data visualisation tools (e.g. Power BI)
  • Familiarity with agile methodologies.
  • Familiarity with Azure Databricks.
