Job Description

Elementary Guidance Counselor

Full-Time, comprehensive benefit package

Position Purpose

Under the general supervision of the elementary Principals and Superintendent. To help students with problems that impede learning and social growth, and to personally and directly assist in preparing them to make responsible life decisions.

Essential Performance Responsibilities

  • Work with students on an individual or small group basis in the solution of personal problems as related to peers, home and family, health, and emotional adjustment.
  • Be available to students so as to provide counseling that will lead to increased personal growth, self-understanding, and maturity.
  • Assist the principal in maintaining the permanent cumulative file for each student and assure appropriateness and currency.
  • Assist students, staff and parents in evaluating student aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data, and work with them in developing the students' educational plans.
  • Monitor the progress of elementary school and middle school graduates for the purpose of improving not only the guidance and counseling services, but also evaluating the effectiveness of the school educational programs.
  • Maintain communications with administration, faculty, and parents so as to better meet the needs of each student.
  • Be actively involved in and serve as a resource person for the teacher/student advisor program of the school.
  • Recognize the extent of his/her training and refer to other specialists those pupils whose problems go beyond his/her skills.

Additional Duties

Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Superintendent and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment

Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.

Travel Requirements

Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

Works in standard office and school building environments.

Qualifications Profile

  • Wyoming State Certification as a Professional Counselor or K-12 School Counselor endorsement through PTSB.
  • Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.

Education/Certification

  • Bachelors from an accredited college or university in counseling or discipline applicable to assignment.
  • Master's Degree preferred.

Experience

Successful prior professional counseling preferred.
