MachShip is a cloud-based freight management platform used by thousands of Australian businesses to book, manage and optimise their freight across carriers. We move fast, we ship real things, and our engineers own what they build — from design through to production, on-call and everything in between.

THE ROLE

This is a

builder-first leadership role

— not a Jira-board coordinator. You’ll write Go every day, set the engineering standard through your own code, and build a high-performance team around you. If you’re energised by shipping real systems fast, thrive in a startup environment, and are already running

What you’ll actually be doing

You’re accountable for the delivery output, technical quality and capability growth of your engineering team. That means you’re in the codebase every day writing Go, leading by example — not just reviewing PRs and running standups.

TECHNICAL LEADERSHIP

• Write production Go daily — design, ship and operate services end-to-end
• Own complex, loosely-defined features from problem to production
• Ensure architectural consistency, reliability and deliberate tech-debt management
• Lead AI and agentic workflow adoption across the team
• Own incident response and a healthy on-call rotation

PEOPLE \& DELIVERY LEADERSHIP

• Hire, onboard and grow engineers; build a high-ownership culture that ships
• Coach and develop team members — set clear expectations, give direct feedback
• Translate product priorities into executable technical plans with realistic timelines
• Own delivery predictability — sprint commitments met, risks raised early
• Communicate proactively with product, ops and engineering leadership

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE

90 days

Shipping production Go yourself. Team’s delivery, codebase and tech debt fully mapped. First execution improvements landed. AI / agentic workflow visibly modelling what good looks like.

6 months

Team delivering predictably to a high standard. At least one significant feature shipped with measurable customer impact. AI tooling adopted across the team with a measurable throughput uplift you drove.

12 months

A team operating at a high level even when you’re not in the room. Faster idea-to-ship cycle times. AI / agentic workflows embedded — with you as the catalyst. Engineers you’ve grown taking on more scope.

EXPERIENCE \& SKILLS

What we’re looking for

Builder with a product mindset — THE key requirement

You’ve rapidly engineered and built out a product in a small / startup environment — taken something from near-zero to a real, operating system at pace. You’re energised by shipping.

Strong, recent production Go

6\+ years software engineering, with Go as your primary production language today. Idiomatic Go, concurrency model, error handling, testing strategy — you can go deep on any of it.

1–3\+ years leading or mentoring engineers

Ideally you’ve built or grown a team, not just inherited one. You hire well, onboard fast, and grow people into higher scope while holding them to a high standard.

Heavy daily user of AI / agentic developer workflows

Claude Code, Cursor, AI agents, MCP servers (built or adopted), autonomous coding sessions, prompt-driven automation. You have concrete artefacts. “I sometimes use Copilot” is not this.

High-growth SaaS background

You’ve come from an environment where engineers own what they ship — on-call, production SLAs, and all. You’re bringing those standards in with you.
