Solutions Application Engineer
Location: Flexible
Department: Engineering
Reports to: North American Technical Director
About CCR
CCR Commercial Refrigeration is a global leader in sustainable refrigeration solutions for food retail and industrial applications. We combine engineering excellence, disciplined execution, and customer focus to deliver complex programs that support our growth strategy across regions and markets
Role Overview
The Application Engineer is responsible for developing complete refrigeration system solutions, including display cases, condensing units, and rack systems. This role bridges sales, engineering, and customers by translating project requirements into optimized, compliant, and high-performing system designs.
The ideal candidate has strong refrigeration fundamentals and is comfortable working across the full system—from case loads through rack selection and controls strategy—while supporting both pre-sales and project execution. This candidate would be serving North and South America so Spanish \& English speaking is a must.
Main Duties \& Responsibilities
- Develop complete refrigeration system designs, including:
- Display case selection and load calculations
- Rack and condensing unit sizing (MT/LT systems, CO₂ transcritical/subcritical)
- Piping concepts and system architecture
- Perform heat load calculations and ensure proper system capacity selection across varying operating conditions
- Select and apply key components:
- Compressors, gas coolers, evaporators
- Expansion devices (EEVs), valves, and controls
- Ancillary components (oil management, receivers, etc.)
- Support system optimization:
- Efficiency (AWEF/energy targets, Title 24 where applicable)
- Reliability and serviceability
- Startup and operational stability (superheat, suction control, etc.)
- Work closely with:
- Sales teams to develop proposals and technical solutions
- Customers/consultants to review specifications and ensure compliance
- Internal engineering teams for product alignment and standardization
- Review project specifications and ensure designs meet applicable standards (UL, DOE, local codes, customer specs, etc.)
- Provide technical support during:
- Project quoting and design phase
- Installation and commissioning (as needed)
- Issue resolution and performance troubleshooting
- Contribute to development of tools, standards, and best practices for system application and selection
Experience \& Qualifications
- University degree in engineering, business, or a related field
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 3–8\+ years of experience in commercial refrigeration
- Strong understanding of refrigeration cycles, including CO₂ (R744) systems preferred
- Experience with:
- Rack systems (parallel compression, ejectors a plus)
- Case and evaporator selection
- Expansion devices and control strategies
- Familiarity with industry standards and regulations:
- UL / ETL requirements
- DOE / AWEF / Title 24 (preferred)
- Proficiency with selection and design tools (manufacturer software, load calculation tools, Excel-based modeling, etc.)
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot system-level issues
- Effective communication skills for working with internal teams and external customers
- Bi-lingual (Spanish \& English)
What Success Looks Like
- Consistently delivers accurate, optimized system designs that perform as expected in the field
- Reduces design iterations and minimizes field issues (startup instability, capacity mismatches, etc.)
- Provides solutions that balance performance, cost, and compliance
- Becomes a trusted technical resource for sales teams and customers
- Improves standardization and contributes to scalable application practices
- Supports successful project execution from concept through commissioning
