About the Role
A dynamic, student-centered public charter school in Northwest Washington, D.C. is seeking a compassionate and dedicated Middle School Counselor to join its student support team for the 2026–2027 school year.
This full-time, hybrid role includes on-campus student support services combined with remote planning, consultation, and administrative responsibilities. The school is committed to whole-child development, equity, and fostering a safe, inclusive environment where every student can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Key Responsibilities
- Provide individual and small-group counseling to support students' academic, social, emotional, and behavioral development
- Develop and implement comprehensive school counseling programs aligned with ASCA standards
- Deliver classroom guidance lessons focused on topics such as social-emotional learning, conflict resolution, decision-making, mental health awareness, and career exploration
- Support students through academic planning, goal setting, and transitions into and out of middle school
- Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and student support staff to develop intervention plans and promote student well-being
- Conduct risk assessments and provide crisis intervention when necessary, following school policies and procedures
- Maintain accurate and confidential student records in accordance with legal and ethical guidelines
- Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress, concerns, and available support services
- Coordinate referrals to community agencies and outside mental health providers as appropriate
- Participate in Student Support Team (SST), MTSS, Section 504, and other student intervention meetings
- Use data to identify student needs, monitor interventions, and evaluate counseling program effectiveness
- Participate in professional development and contribute positively to the school community
QualificationsEducation
- Master's degree in School Counseling, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field
- Valid School Counselor certification/licensure (or eligibility for licensure in the District of Columbia)
Experience
- Minimum of two years of school counseling experience, preferably in a charter school setting
- Experience working with middle school students preferred
- Experience implementing comprehensive school counseling programs
- Experience supporting diverse student populations, including students with IEPs, Section 504 plans, and multilingual learners
Skills
- Strong understanding of adolescent development and social-emotional learning
- Excellent counseling, crisis intervention, and conflict resolution skills
- Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and staff
- Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills
- Knowledge of trauma-informed and culturally responsive practices
- Ability to analyze student data and develop targeted interventions
- Commitment to equity, inclusion, and student-centered support
- Ability to obtain or hold appropriate DC School Counselor licensure
