About The Role

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Staff Software Engineer to join the Merchant Experience team at Stripe. In this pivotal role, you will serve as a technical leader responsible for shaping the future of how merchants interact with Stripe products through the Dashboard and related interfaces. Your expertise will drive significant improvements in the quality, performance, and user experience of our core merchant-facing surfaces. You will lead complex, cross-team projects, influence technical strategy, and innovate on the integration of emerging technologies such as AI to redefine merchant workflows. Qualifications

• 10-15\+ years of experience in software engineering, with a focus on building large-scale, user-facing web applications
• Proven track record leading large-scale, cross-functional engineering projects with broad organizational impact
• Deep expertise in modern frontend development, particularly with React, and full-stack development skills
• Strong understanding of performance engineering, including profiling, instrumentation, and optimization techniques
• Experience deploying and maintaining web applications at a global scale, including CDN, build tooling, and browser compatibility
• Familiarity with distributed systems, API design, and platform infrastructure development
• Exceptional communication skills, capable of articulating technical vision to diverse audiences including engineers, product managers, and executives
• Experience with design systems, component libraries, or frontend platform infrastructure
• Hands-on experience integrating AI capabilities into user-facing products
• Ability to influence technical direction and foster alignment across multiple teams without formal authority
• Passion for developer experience and mentoring senior engineers to elevate engineering standards
• Understanding of the intersection of AI and UX, with a critical approach to emerging interaction paradigms

Responsibilities

• Define and execute the technical strategy for merchant-facing experiences across Stripe, emphasizing quality, performance, and AI integration
• Lead the design and delivery of complex, cross-team projects that enhance the reliability, responsiveness, and polish of Stripe’s merchant surfaces
• Establish engineering standards, tooling, and processes that promote high-quality, performant UI development by default
• Drive performance improvements as a core product feature, including instrumentation, architectural enhancements, and speed optimizations
• Innovate on the future of merchant UX by exploring and prototyping AI-driven features that transform discovery, configuration, and operational workflows
• Build scalable platforms, frameworks, components, and developer tools to increase engineering productivity and enforce best practices
• Collaborate with Product, Design, AI/ML, and Infrastructure teams to translate high-level product vision into actionable technical roadmaps
• Mentor and develop engineering talent across teams, fostering a culture of craftsmanship, high standards, and continuous improvement
• Influence technical decision-making and contribute to the overall engineering culture at Stripe
