Job Description

The Opportunity

We are partnering with an early-stage SaaS company (\~20 employees) that has built a strong technical foundation and is now entering a critical scaling phase. The company has developed core product capabilities, including data science and analytics, and is now focused on productionizing these systems, expanding integrations, and maturing engineering execution.

This role is being created as the founding technical leader transitions out of day-to-day management and back into a deeply technical architecture and research-focused role. The incoming Head of Engineering will take ownership of the engineering organization, driving execution, scalability, and team leadership while partnering closely with this technical leader.

The leadership team is based in the Boston area but have been flexible/hybrid regarding in-office or remote work. The ability to commute into Boston is a nice to have.

Core Responsibilities

Engineering Leadership

Lead a small, highly capable engineering team with a focus on accountability, delivery, and team development. Build a self-directed, collaborative engineering culture in a fully remote environment. Manage hiring, performance, and career development while maintaining a high talent bar. Drive team alignment while allowing for creativity and ownership.

Product \& Execution Ownership

Own product execution in partnership with leadership, ensuring alignment with business goals. Manage roadmap prioritization and tradeoffs between urgent needs and long-term goals. Ensure consistent, high-quality feature delivery with clear communication to stakeholders. Translate technical capabilities into customer-facing value.

Technical \& Architectural Leadership

Provide architectural guidance and make pragmatic decisions across systems design. Collaborate with the internal architect on long-term technical strategy. Ensure systems are scalable, reliable, and well-structured. Guide decisions across service-oriented architectures, data pipelines, and integrations.

Execution of Key Business Initiatives

Productionize existing data science capabilities into customer-ready features. Expand and strengthen enterprise partner integrations. Support increasing demands around compliance, security, and enterprise readiness. Drive engineering discipline and predictability in delivery.

What This Role Is (and Is Not)

This is a player–coach leadership role focused on scaling execution and building a high-functioning engineering organization. This is not a zero-to-one build, nor a large, highly structured enterprise environment.

What Success Looks Like (6–12 Months)

  • Roadmap for new product capabilities are fully deployed and actively used by customers
  • Partner integrations are live, stable, and delivering value
  • Engineering operates with clear priorities and predictable delivery
  • Team is aligned, accountable, and developing effectively

What You Bring

  • Strong technical background as a software engineer or systems builder
  • Experience in SaaS environments with integrations and distributed systems
  • Proven ability to lead small teams in early-stage or scaling environments
  • Experience balancing speed, structure, and evolving product priorities
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills in remote teams
