We're partnering with a fast-growing Australian technology company looking to appoint a Head of Software Engineering to help shape the next stage of its growth.

This is a newly created leadership position suited to someone who enjoys operating at the intersection of engineering leadership, delivery excellence, and people management. The engineering team is small, senior, and already performing well technically. The focus of this role is raising the bar on how that team operates, delivery discipline, engineering process, QA, and DevOps, while partnering closely with the current technical leadership on architecture and direction.

Your job is to own the people side, the delivery side, and the operational rigour that lets a high performing technical team scale without losing quality or pace – partnering with the existing Head of Engineering, who remains a significant voice on technical architecture and direction.

What you'll be doing

  • Own people management, internal process, and delivery discipline across engineering, QA, and DevOps.
  • Partner with the existing technical leader on architecture and direction, bringing a strong enough technical background to contribute meaningfully to that conversation, not just observe it.
  • Build and run the internal processes that let a senior, high performing team stay high performing as headcount grows.
  • Own QA and DevOps as functions, not just headcount within them.
  • Mentor and manage engineers directly, with the expectation you can still step into the code when it matters.
  • Work with product on ensuring engineering delivers against commitments.
  • Foster a culture where a technically excellent team also has strong process discipline and predictable delivery.

About you

  • You'll likely come from a Senior Engineering Leadership, Head of Engineering, or Engineering Manager background where you've operated as the people and delivery leader alongside a strong technical architect or principal engineer, rather than as the sole technical decision maker.
  • You'll bring genuine, recent hands-on technical credibility, not several years removed from code. Experience managing senior engineers directly.
  • A track record of building engineering process and delivery discipline from a lighter starting point.
  • Comfort partnering with, rather than competing with, a strong technical counterpart. Experience owning QA and DevOps as functions.
  • Strong communication skills across executive, product, and engineering stakeholders.
