Job Opening - English Teacher \& Director of Forensics (Speech \& Debate)
Position Summary
Responsibilities
Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School seeks a mission-driven English Teacher \& Director of Forensics to join its faculty beginning August 2026\. This full-time position blends two core responsibilities:
Primary Role
: English Teacher — teaching high school English across multiple grade levels, contributing to a collaborative and innovative department, and supporting the holistic formation of students in the Jesuit tradition.
Secondary Role: Director of Forensics / Head Speech \& Debate Coach
— leading Brebeuf’s nationally recognized Speech \& Debate program in alignment with the school’s mission and commitment to forming articulate, ethical, and engaged student leaders.

Duties/Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities — English Teacher
- Create an engaging, inclusive, and academically challenging classroom environment that supports a diverse community of learners.
- Teach high school English courses with strong pedagogical grounding in literature, writing, critical thinking, and communication.
- Collaborate with colleagues within and beyond the English Department to support student learning, interdisciplinary initiatives, and departmental goals.
- Teach effectively in a technology-rich environment, including the school’s 1:1 Bring Your Own Technology program.
- Communicate consistently and professionally with parents/guardians regarding student progress and classroom expectations.
- Participate fully in departmental meetings, professional development, and school-wide responsibilities.
- Support the religious, service, and extracurricular life of the school community
- Model the characteristics of the “Grad at Grad”: open to growth, intellectually competent, loving, religious, and committed to promoting justice.
**Secondary Responsibilities — Director of Forensics / Head Speech \& Debate Coach
Coaching \& Instruction**
- Coach students across a wide range of forensics events. Current team strengths include Lincoln-Douglas Debate, World Schools Debate, Extemporaneous Speaking, Congressional Debate, Discussion, Broadcasting, and selected interpretive/public address events.
- Mentor students in research, argumentation, delivery, leadership, and ethical competition while fostering a team culture grounded in student voice, civic engagement, and personal growth.
Program Leadership \& Operations
- Oversee tournament preparation and participation, including scheduling, registration, Saturday competitions, and occasional overnight travel.
- Recruit and support parent judges; maintain clear communication with families regarding expectations and student progress.
- Ensure program compliance with ISSDA and NSDA guidelines and manage the program budget and resources.
- Supervise assistant coaches and volunteers and drive school-provided vehicles for regional travel (training provided).
Required
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Experience teaching high school English.
- Bachelor’s degree and teaching license in English or a related field.
- Demonstrated ability to build strong, compassionate relationships with students from diverse backgrounds.
- Strong writing, speaking, and communication skills.
- Ability to thrive in a collaborative, mission-driven, technology-forward environment.
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to complete school-provided training for operating small team buses/vans.
- Commitment to afternoon practices, Saturday tournaments, and occasional overnight travel
Preferred
- Master’s degree in English or a related field, or willingness to pursue one.
- 5\+ years of high school English teaching experience.
- Proven experience in competitive Speech \& Debate as a coach or competitor.
- Experience leading a forensics program or coaching multiple competitive events.
- Experience in independent or Catholic school settings.
- Familiarity with Jesuit education and its mission
