Job Description

Company

Switchboard

is rebuilding the commercial insurance brokerage from the ground up to help America’s small businesses get to work and keep working.

Insurance is 14% of the American economy, and businesses alone spend $500B on premiums every year. For the men and women who run America's small businesses, insurance isn't optional. No restaurant owner can sign a lease, no contractor can start a new job, no local manufacturer can start a new production line without it.

But only 15% of small business insurance gets placed directly online.

The other 85% goes through a local broker who doesn’t specialize in complex SMB insurance - so they quote one or two markets, do the minimum, and walk away when the work gets hard. Businesses end up overpaying, get the wrong coverage, or go uninsured entirely.

We're building the full brokerage digital stack end to end, with humans and AI agents working together, so a small business owner gets the same quality of advice, service, and choice a billion-dollar company gets.

We’re a small team with the goal of building a generational financial services company that becomes the permanent foundation of how the small-business economy works.

If solving hard technical problems from first principles, operating at the frontier of what AI can actually do in a real, regulated, money-moving industry excites you, come join us.

About the role

You'll ship production code from your first week; not toy features, but real systems. You'll have access to mentorship by senior engineers and will learn more in three months here than three years at a big company. We're looking for someone who wants to become a great engineer by doing, not by waiting for permission.

You will work directly with the co-founders, CTO

Huy Huynh

\& CEO

Matthew Levin

plus another senior engineer.

Responsibilities

  • Build and ship features end to end with AI agents
  • Contribute to the full-stack (backend, frontend, infrastructure, deployment). We ship features from concept to production in days not weeks. Our tech stack includes: Ruby on Rails 8\.1, Hotwire (Turbo \+ Stimulus), Postgres, and AWS, but experience with Rails is not required
  • Write production-grade code with tests, handle edge cases, and own what you ship
  • Pair with senior engineers and founders, learning by doing

Requirements

  • You've built and shipped something real whether that’s a side project, an open-source tool, etc. We care about what you've done, not where you went to school
  • Strong CS fundamentals: data structures, systems design, ability to reason about how things work under the hood. Formal CS education is not required but first principles knowledge is.
  • You use AI tools to write code and are intentional about how you work
  • Effective cross-disciplinary communicator
  • Nice to have: familiarity with any OOP language, open-source contributions or publicly visible work

Benefits

  • $80k-110k/yr base \+ equity
  • 20 days PTO
  • Medical, dental, vision
  • 401k
  • Paid parental leave

This is an on site job working in our office at 221 Canal St, NYC. If you want to build the financial infrastructure that America's small businesses run on, please apply.
