Description
The US Geological Survey - Great Lakes Science Center located in Ann Arbor, MI is seeking a student contractor for a position in its aquatic research laboratory/wetlab. This is contracted position funded for 1 year and may be extended up to a maximum total of 2 years without further competition. Appointment to this position, however, will not convey permanent status in the Federal service. Pay is at least $23\.18 per hour but includes no medical benefits or overtime. Temporary appointees are not covered by the Federal Employee Retirement System and are ineligible for Federal life, dental, or vision insurance.
Duties
The position will support the on-going care and maintenance of fish eggs and associated hatched fry. Care includes feeding, cleaning, transferring, weighing, measuring, tagging, and general maintenance of support equipment. An individual displaying an aptitude after training will graduate to more difficult tasks, species, and lifestages. Rearing of any potentially cultured larvae to juvenile fish will incorporate larger systems such as 235–1130-gallon recirculating aquaculture system tanks and will likewise be supported by the contractor. Individual will assist in laboratory sample and data processing and data analyses overseen by GLSC staff.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate would work full-time (40 hours per week), but students that could work part time through April will also be considered. To be eligible for a student services contract, the applicant must be either a currently enrolled student or have graduated within the past 12 months (i.e. start date of May 1st 2026 and a graduation date of May 2nd 2025). An ecology or aquaculture background is required, and experience with Great Lakes fishes is desirable.
