Join a boutique 20\+ year old, 40-person Engineering Firm as a Lead Mechanical Engineer with team \& technical leadership responsibilities. This role will initially be remote based, with ad-hoc in-person meetings with clients NYC metro and some travel to Connecticut to work in office at the MEP Firm itself. Base salary circa $150k to $180k dependent on skills \& experience.
Your new role
You will serve as Engineer of Record (PE License mandatory) and Responsible Charge for all HVAC projects while also leading the development of their New York market presence. This is a senior technical and leadership role for a seasoned healthcare HVAC engineer who is ready to combine hands-on engineering excellence with strategic growth responsibilities.
The position will be based in New York. During an initial onboarding period, the role will include visits to their Connecticut office to establish technical alignment, QA/QC standards, and working relationships. Once rapport and processes are established, the position will transition to full-time New York-based remote work, supporting a virtual/satellite NY office with the long-term goal of a physical New York office location.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership \& Responsible Charge
- Serve as Engineer of Record and Responsible Charge for all HVAC projects, ensuring compliance with applicable codes, standards, and firm QA/QC procedures.
- Provide technical oversight, review, and final sign-off on HVAC designs, calculations, specifications, and construction documents.
- Maintain signatory authority for proposals, design documents, and QA/QC approvals.
- Lead HVAC system design for healthcare and complex building projects, including hospitals, ambulatory care facilities, laboratories, and medical office buildings.
- Perform and oversee load calculations, system selection, equipment sizing, and energy-efficient system design using industry-standard tools.
- Ensure compliance with ASHRAE, ASHRAE 170, FGI, NFPA, and applicable state and local codes.
Quality, Mentorship \& Internal Leadership
- Establish and maintain HVAC design standards and QA/QC processes across projects.
- Mentor and technically guide HVAC engineers and designers, supporting skill development and consistency in deliverables.
- Participate in internal design reviews and support continuous improvement of engineering practices.
New York Market Development
- Lead the firm’s New York HVAC engineering presence, supporting the growth of a virtual/satellite NY office.
- Develop and maintain client relationships in the New York market, particularly in healthcare and related sectors.
- Support hiring and onboarding of HVAC engineering staff as the NY presence grows.
- Collaborate with firm leadership on strategic growth initiatives related to the New York office and long-term brick-and-mortar planning.
