Brief Description

This Mechanical Engineer role is key to ifm electronic’s greater manufacturing success in the United States. This position resides in ifm prover USA located in Malvern, PA. Our manufacturing facility specializes in the design and manufacturing of temperature and flow sensing products.

Job Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and validate new sensors from initial prototypes to final products to be used in the process industry
  • Apply Lean design methods for manufacturability
  • Lead brainstorming and ideation sessions to create innovations that solve market needs
  • Provide Computer-Aided Design (CAD) support (create drawings and documentation packages) for the development of new electro-mechanical products (sensors)
  • Develop product prototypes and looks/works models for design validation, aesthetics, performance, and usability reviews. Comfortable with machining tools, rapid prototype assembly, and hands-on field testing
  • Employ design for manufacturing knowledge to design system components with various technologies, including injection molding, deep drawn tooling, sheet metal, or machining
  • Employ knowledge of elastomeric sealing technologies to innovate
  • Work closely with project management using a Stage/Gate process with focus on defining the timeline and key milestones. Ensure deliverables are executed on time, to the cost, and to quality specifications
  • Create product development test plans with lab technicians
  • Investigate root causes of failures occurring in mechanical verification testing
  • Work closely with Sensor Engineers during the design process to bring prototypes and theoretical ideas to mass-producible, realistic products
  • Collaborate with the manufacturing team, quality team, and assemblers to bring new products to market that exhibit a balance between innovation and ease of assembly
  • Work with the procurement team to identify the best suppliers and edit parts according to supplier feedback for manufacturability

Candidate Qualifications

  • B.S. Mechanical Engineering preferred
  • Minimum 3\+ years of product design/analysis experience preferred
  • 3\+ years experience in Solidworks
  • Strong understanding of mechanical principles
  • Knowledge of Blueprint reading and Geometry and Tolerance specifications
  • Experience working in a machine shop with manual mills, lathes, and basic CNC machines
  • Experience running mechanical and environmental testing on units in development stages
  • Strong mechanical fabrication skills
  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail with the ability to handle multiple complex situations daily
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Self-driven and willing to acquire new skills to grow in the position
  • Experience with common MS Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced, dynamic, and high visibility environment with minimal supervision
