Job Summary

PRN NIGHTS

The

Medical Laboratory Scientist

provides state of the art laboratory specimen testing, including phlebotomy, from neonates to geriatric patients ensuring patient safety.

General Functions

  • Processes and tests blood and other body fluid specimens for clinical laboratory
  • Reviews test results and applies the correct clinical interpretation of that data
  • Reports lab results accurately and responsively, to include use of a laboratory information system
  • Performs operation, maintenance and advanced troubleshooting of laboratory instrumentation and equipment
  • Performs venous and capillary phlebotomy and ensures specimen integrity
  • Performs basic clerical functions
  • Acts as a resource person for providing information and problem solving for the Medical Technicians, Phlebotomists and other laboratory personnel
  • Assists with R\&D projects as required
  • Trains employees and students
  • Relays orders, take inventory and stocks supplies
  • Utilizes resources efficiently and effectively
  • Maintains safe environment
  • Addresses patient population-specific needs
  • Participates in Performance Improvement activities

Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s Degree from an approved college or university and/or graduate of an accredited school of medical technology, or equivalent such as military training as defined by 42 CFR 493\.1489\. Personnel who, prior to 2/28/92 have qualified at the Medical Technologist level by achieving a satisfactory grade on a HHS examination. The above meets required criteria as defined by CLIA regulations for High Complexity testing (42 CFR 493\.1489, Jan. 24, 2003).

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

6 months to 1 year Medical Lab Scientist experience in acute care facility

PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE:

Certified (registered) or registry-eligible in accordance with an approved certifying agency, e.g. ASCP, HHS, AMT. Registry eligible should obtain certification within 1 year from date of hire. Once certified, no annual renewals are required.
