About the Opportunity

We’ve partnered with a large academic health system in Chicago to find an experienced Outpatient Coder II. This is an excellent opportunity to join a high-volume, high-complexity coding team at one of the most respected academic medical centers in the country.

Our client is:

  • Consistently ranked the #1 hospital in Illinois and the Chicago Metro region by U.S. News \& World Report
  • A large academic health system with a strong reputation for teaching, research, and specialty care
  • Designated as both a Level I and Level II trauma center
  • Known for high-acuity inpatient populations, complex surgeries, and transplant programs
  • Recognized for strong compliance, quality, and clinical excellence

If you want your next move to be somewhere genuinely regarded as a destination employer, this is it.

The Role

As an Outpatient Coder II, you’ll serve as a coding and reimbursement expert across complex outpatient encounters — including Observation stays, Same Day Surgery, Surgery Center, and Outpatient in a Bed. You’ll apply deep knowledge of ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, and CPT codes and modifiers to drive accurate coding and reimbursement.

This is a hands-on role with a team of educators and coding managers who actively support coder development — ideal for someone who wants to grow their expertise inside a teaching hospital environment.

What You’ll Own

  • Assigning accurate ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 codes to complex outpatient visit types
  • Interpreting health record documentation using anatomy, physiology, disease process, and pharmacology knowledge
  • Sending physician queries when documentation clarification is needed
  • Resolving NCCI Edits with approved facility modifiers
  • Working with HCPCS Level I/II, Chargemaster, and CPT soft codes
  • Utilizing 3M Encoder and CAC (computer-assisted coding) tools — including flagging system or CAC issues to IT
  • Meeting 95% coding accuracy and 90% productivity standards across outpatient encounter types

What You’ll Bring

  • RHIT, RHIA, or CCS credential required (AHIMA member)
  • 3–4 years of coding experience in an acute-care healthcare setting (4\+ years preferred)
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred
  • Experience with teaching hospitals, transplant cases, and complex surgeries preferred
  • Working knowledge of Coding Clinic for HCPCS, CPT Assistant, and ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

The Details

  • Compensation:

$22\.66–$39\.43/hour (approx. $47K–$82K annually, based on experience)

  • Schedule:

Monday–Friday, day shift (team typically starts early)

  • Benefits highlights:

Annual performance bonus, $1,000/year education stipend (plus tuition reimbursement), a paid Wellness Day Off separate from PTO, $250 annual wellness allowance, and flexible scheduling
