Job Description
The Oversize/Overweight Permit Technician is responsible for obtaining, reviewing, and managing transportation permits for oversize and overweight freight throughout the United States. This position ensures all shipments comply with federal, state, county, and local regulations while coordinating routing, escorts, utility clearances, and permit requirements to support safe and legal transportation operations.
Essential Duties \& Responsibilities:
Permitting \& Compliance
Obtain oversize and overweight permits from state, county, municipal, and toll authorities.
Review load dimensions, axle weights, overhangs, and equipment configurations for permit accuracy.
Verify permit restrictions, curfews, holiday restrictions, and travel limitations. Work closely with the permit team and Oversize Coordinators.
Ensure compliance with all DOT, state, and local regulations governing OS/OW transportation.
Maintain permit records and supporting documentation.
Route Planning with Permit Team and Drivers
Analyze and develop support oversize and overweight shipments.
Review bridge restrictions, road construction, seasonal restrictions, and height clearances.
Coordinate with Oversize Coordinators the need for utility escorts, bucket trucks, police escorts, and civilian escort vehicles as required.
Identify potential routing conflicts and develop alternative routing solutions.
Operations Coordination
Communicate permit requirements and routing instructions to coordinators and drivers.
Coordinate pickup and delivery schedules to align with permit validity periods.
Provide drivers with permit packets and route-specific instructions.
Monitor permit status and expedite urgent permit requests when required.
Administrative Functions
Maintain permit databases and tracking systems with Operations Manager and Coordinator Manager.
Audit permits for accuracy prior to issuance to drivers.
Track permit costs and submit permit charges for billing.
Required Qualifications:
Education
High School Diploma or GED required.
Experience
2\+ years of transportation, dispatch, permitting, logistics, or heavy-haul experience preferred.
Technical Knowledge
Knowledge of federal DOT regulations.
Understanding of state OS/OW permit requirements.
Familiarity with route survey requirements and clearance verification.
Computer Skills
