Python Backend/Infrastructure Software Engineer is required by an AI platform startup (based in New York) assisting government contractors in winning more work by streamlining the RFP process. The company is becoming the Salesforce for government contractors. They are the vendor of choice for most top 10 government contractors with 20% month-over-month growth. You'll work on high-priority problems that directly impact their scaling to serve 100,000\+ users.

Requirements

  • Strong Computer Science or other STEM degree from a top university
  • 5\+ years of experience in backend engineering with strong Python expertise and experience building or scaling production backend services.
  • Experience scaling backend systems at a Series A–C startup
  • Backend-focused role with 70% backend work and 30% infrastructure, primarily in Python and infrastructure scaling.
  • Must have experience with Async Python, FastAPI, MongoDB, and AWS services managed through Terraform.
  • Experience designing or optimizing async systems, background job orchestration, or distributed workflows (e.g., Temporal, Celery, queues).
  • Experience working with MongoDB / DocumentDB or other high-scale NoSQL databases.
  • Able to work on-site in NYC 4 days/week.

What you'll do:

  • Profiling and optimizing critical paths across Python backend (FastAPI) to keep API response times low and AI-driven workflows efficient as the number of users, documents, and requests on the platform grows.
  • Identifying and resolving performance bottlenecks across the database layer (DocumentDB/MongoDB), background job orchestration (Temporal), and async processing infrastructure that powers long-running LLM and document-processing workloads.
  • Designing and implementing infrastructure improvements across Kubernetes, Terraform, and cloud environments (AWS GovCloud / Azure GovCloud) to support significantly higher concurrency, heavier workloads, and enterprise-scale deployments.
  • Enhancing company’s observability stack (Grafana) by improving logging, metrics, tracing, and alerting to better understand system behavior in production, diagnose issues quickly, and proactively prevent outages as the platform scales.
