Position Summary

Morehouse School of Medicine is seeking a Research Assistant to support a federally funded neuroscience research project focused on understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms that regulate late-stage hippocampal neurogenesis and neuronal maturation. This work explores how signaling through G protein-coupled receptors and the Wnt/β-catenin pathway impacts the integration of new neurons into hippocampal circuits and influences emotional processing, memory, and behavior. The Research Assistant will work under the supervision of the Principal Investigator to perform experiments involving animal models, molecular techniques, and cell culture.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:) Associate’s degree with at least two (2) years of relevant research experience.

Experience: 2 – 4 years of research experience in laboratory, clinical, or field research settings (may include undergraduate research, internships, or volunteer experience).

Preferred Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Neuroscience, Biology, Biochemistry, or related discipline from a regionally accredited college or university

Experience: Three (3) or more years of professional research experience in an academic, clinical, or industry research setting.

Job Duties

Description of Job Duty

  • Coordinate and participate in laboratory research activities to assist investigators in the collection, verification, and compilation of experimental data related to neuroscience research using molecular, cellular, and animal model systems.
  • Assist in planning and conducting laboratory studies under the guidance of the principal investigator, including preparing experimental protocols, timelines, and data collection workflows for molecular and cellular neuroscience experiments.
  • Under general supervision, perform a variety of laboratory tests and experiments according to established protocols and assigned schedules, including molecular biology techniques such as PCR , qPCR, Western blotting, and RNA or protein analyses.
  • Set up and execute experiments as prescribed by the principal investigator, including preparation of reagents, buffers, biological samples, and laboratory equipment while following standard operating procedures to ensure research quality and reproducibility.
  • Conduct experiments involving mouse models, including assisting with animal handling, genotyping, tissue collection, and basic colony maintenance in compliance with institutional animal care and use guidelines.
  • Maintain mammalian cell culture systems and assist with experiments involving neuronal or cell-based assays.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and inventory; perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting; order supplies and reagents as needed while ensuring laboratory safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory notebooks, databases, and research documentation; organize experimental data and assist with data verification and quality control.
  • Assist in the preparation of project reports, technical documentation, figures, and data summaries for research presentations, manuscripts, and grant applications.
  • Conduct literature reviews and summarize relevant scientific findings to support ongoing research projects and proposal development.
  • Collaborate with research team members, including faculty, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and other research staff, to accomplish project objectives.
  • Maintain compliance with all institutional policies, regulatory requirements, ethical standards, and safety protocols, including IRB , IACUC , HIPAA , and laboratory safety regulations.
  • Attend research team meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities; stay current with research methodologies and best practices in the field.
  • Knowledge of scientific research methods, experimental design, and data collection procedures
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety practices, biosafety protocols, and proper handling of research materials
  • Knowledge in performing laboratory techniques, operating research equipment, and following standard operating procedures with precision
  • Knowledge in data management, including data entry, verification, quality control, and identifying and resolving discrepancies
  • Knowledge in using computer applications, databases, and specialized research software for data collection and analysis
  • Investigates and proposes alternative experimental procedures for consideration by a principal investigator.
  • Assists in planning and scheduling research procedures.
  • Under general supervision, performs a variety of defined research and laboratory tests and experiments according to prescribed protocols and assigned schedules. Sets up experiments as prescribed by a principal investigator.
  • May be responsible for demonstrating and training others in the proper use/operation of laboratory techniques and equipment.
  • May conduct literature reviews for related research developments and techniques, and compile findings.
  • May monitor the handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous substances.

It is MSM’s Immunization policy that all Prospective Employees are encouraged to provide proof that they are vaccinated against COVID -19 prior to commencement of employment. If employment will commence during Flu Season, MSM requires all individuals to provide proof that they are vaccinated against Seasonal Influenza for the current Flu Season, unless granted an exemption. Failure to provide proof of vaccination for any required vaccines or obtain an exemption from MSM will result in rescission of a candidate’s offer of employment or disciplinary action up to and including termination.
