Position Summary

The College of Science at Long Island University seeks a full-time Research Assistant to support faculty-led research and research laboratory activities at the LIU Post campus. The Research Assistant will work collaboratively with faculty and students across biology, chemistry, physics, and related interdisciplinary areas.

The position supports experimental research, scientific instrumentation, data collection and analysis, research documentation, laboratory operations, and the training of student researchers. The Research Assistant will contribute to the College's growing research enterprise by supporting faculty research projects, student research experiences, scholarly publications, and externally funded research activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct scientific research under the direction of College of Science faculty and principal investigators.
  • Assist with the design, execution, optimization, and documentation of experiments and research protocols.
  • Collect, organize, analyze, interpret, and maintain scientific and experimental data.
  • Operate scientific instruments, laboratory equipment, and research technologies appropriate to assigned projects.
  • Assist with instrument setup, calibration, routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and research readiness.
  • Prepare samples, materials, solutions, specimens, equipment, and other resources required for research activities.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory notebooks, research records, protocols, and technical documentation.
  • Assist faculty and research teams with the preparation of data, figures, technical information, reports, presentations, manuscripts, and materials associated with research and externally funded projects.
  • Train and assist undergraduate and graduate researchers in laboratory procedures, instrument operation, experimental workflows, data integrity, documentation, and laboratory safety.
  • Support research laboratory inventories and assist with the procurement, organization, and maintenance of research supplies and materials.
  • Assist in maintaining safe, organized, and effective research laboratory environments in accordance with University policies and applicable safety requirements.
  • Coordinate with faculty, laboratory personnel, vendors, Facilities, and other University offices as necessary to support research activities and scientific instrumentation.
  • Participate in collaborative and interdisciplinary research initiatives within the College of Science.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, physics, biochemistry, materials science, or a closely related scientific discipline.
  • Demonstrated undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, or comparable scientific research experience.
  • Evidence of research productivity, including authorship or co-authorship of at least one peer-reviewed scientific publication.
  • Hands-on experience conducting laboratory or experimental research.
  • Experience collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and documenting scientific data.
  • Experience with scientific instrumentation, laboratory equipment, or research technologies.
  • Knowledge of appropriate laboratory and research safety practices.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively both independently and collaboratively with faculty, students, staff, and other research personnel.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Research experience in an academic, government, national laboratory, industrial, or comparable scientific research environment.
  • Experience with advanced scientific instrumentation, analytical techniques, imaging, computational tools, or other research technologies.
  • Experience with instrument calibration, troubleshooting, maintenance, and user training.
  • Experience training or mentoring undergraduate researchers or other laboratory personnel.
  • Evidence of multiple peer-reviewed scientific publications, presentations, or other scholarly products.
  • Experience supporting collaborative, interdisciplinary, or externally funded research projects.
  • Experience with laboratory inventories, research supplies, research documentation, and laboratory operations.
