Job Description
Senior Mechanisms Engineer, Advanced Nuclear Systems
Help engineer the next era of commercial nuclear technology.
A pioneering clean energy organization is developing the first new commercial reactor design introduced in more than five decades. This is a rare opportunity to contribute to a transformative program that will redefine how nuclear power is designed, controlled, and deployed.
We are seeking a Senior Mechanisms Engineer to lead the design and realization of mission critical mechanical systems within a next generation reactor platform. Your work will directly influence core reactivity control, safety actuation, and system reliability in one of the most ambitious energy engineering efforts of this generation.
Your Impact
You will design precision mechanisms that operate in demanding environments where performance, durability, and safety margins are paramount. From concept development to final validation, you will drive technical decisions that enable safe, efficient reactor operation.
Your contributions will support key subsystems such as control blade actuation assemblies, valve systems, and other high consequence mechanical components that safeguard reactor performance.
What You Will Do
- Lead the end to end design of complex mechanical subsystems, owning performance, reliability, and delivery milestones.
- Conduct rigorous trade studies to evaluate architectures, materials, and manufacturing approaches.
- Perform detailed thermomechanical evaluations, including static strength, fatigue life, and durability assessments using analytical methods and finite element modeling tools.
- Execute kinematic analysis to validate motion profiles and performance margins.
- Develop manufacturing plans, assembly procedures, and comprehensive test strategies.
- Create and maintain structured bills of materials and configuration documentation.
- Identify, qualify, and collaborate with suppliers to ensure high quality component production.
- Own subsystem risk assessments, including failure modes and effects analysis.
- Coordinate across electrical, systems, and manufacturing engineering teams to refine requirements and ensure seamless integration.
Required Background
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
- At least four years of professional experience designing precision mechanical mechanisms.
- At least four years of experience performing structural and stress analysis using both classical analytical techniques and finite element software such as Abaqus, Ansys, FEMAP, or comparable tools.
Preferred Experience
- Designing and detailing complex multi part assemblies in advanced CAD platforms such as NX or similar systems.
- Bringing hardware from concept through fabrication, deployment, and iterative refinement.
- Developing pneumatic or fluid driven actuation systems.
- Integrating motors, encoders, and other electromechanical components into precision mechanisms.
- Applying geometric dimensioning and tolerancing principles in production ready designs.
- Combining first principles hand calculations with higher fidelity simulation approaches.
- Rapidly constructing free body diagrams and analytical models for unfamiliar systems.
- Working effectively in cross functional, interdisciplinary engineering teams.
- Using text based engineering or development tools in technical workflows.
Work Environment and Expectations
- This is a fully onsite position based at our Southern California headquarters.
- The role may require extended hours or weekend work during critical program milestones.
Why Join
This program represents a historic milestone in commercial nuclear energy. As a Senior Mechanisms Engineer, you will not only design high performance hardware, you will help enable a new chapter in safe, scalable, and sustainable power generation. If you are driven by technical rigor, ownership, and the opportunity to build systems that truly matter, we encourage you to apply.
