Job Description

Smart Approaches to Marijuana seeks a social media and communications manager.

SAM is the nation’s premier

anti-marijuana

legalization and drug policy organization, fighting to make sure law- and policymakers rely on science when they approach marijuana rather than the profit motives of an addiction industry. We are looking for a highly motivated self-starter to join our agile team in DC.

You will be a good fit if you . . .

  • Have experience working in political/advocacy communications on Capitol Hill or as a writer/editor at an established publication with a political/policy focus.

We are looking strongly for candidates with those backgrounds.

  • Have strong writing chops: you will be drafting social content, press releases, talking points, marketing emails, and more.

An edit test will be required.

  • Are comfortable using digital platforms (social media, email, audio, and video) to distill complex policy issues into powerful and relatable narratives
  • Love to talk to reporters, podcasters, broadcast hosts, influencers, and more
  • Are familiar with state and federal policy around marijuana, other drugs, and public health
  • Adopt a can-do, positive attitude in high-pressure situations
  • Are familiar with digital design platforms like Canva
  • Are proficient with WordPress CMS
  • Are familiar with email platforms like Mailchimp and Constant Contact

The work you will be doing includes . . .

  • Writing and editing op-eds, emails, and more
  • Devloping and creating social campaigns and content from our brand accounts and beyond
  • Using the full suite of digital content tools to drive SAM messaging
  • Outreach to print, broadcast, podcast, new media, and everything else
  • Researching drug policy issues at the state and federal level
  • Promoting key events for the organization and its principals
  • Generally supporting the Director of Content and Editorial Strategy

Our ideal candidate has 3-5 years’ progressive experience in political communications, journalism, or a related field. We offer unlimited PTO, a competitive health plan, and an incredible, brand-new workspace: our own Capitol Hill townhouse.

This is a DC-only position with hours 8:30AM to 5:30PM.

Salary range:

$75,000-$90,000

To apply, send a resume and cover letter to [email protected].
