Position Summary
This position will install, repair, and maintain all steam and hydronic heating systems for Oshkosh Correctional Institution (OSCI), by using proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and following safety procedures.
The position will also act as a backup and support in times of high work load for the HVAC/Refrigeration Specialist - Advanced, as directed.
Salary Information
This position is in pay schedule and range 04-00 with a starting pay of
$48\.09/hour, $48\.86/hour, or
$49\.66/hour
. Pay will be set in accordance with the Compensation Plan and Wisconsin Administrative Code in effect at the time of hire. A probationary period is required.
This classification is included in the Building \& Trades Bargaining unit, and the pay rate is set depending on the number of annual leave hours selected, per the current booklet.

Job Details
This position is not eligible for remote work and will work on site.
This position is FLSA Non-Exempt.
Anticipated schedule will be Monday – Friday 6:45 AM – 3:30 PM.
This position will also have emergency on-call responsibilities which may include, nights, weekends, and holidays.
This position has physical requirements related to performing the job duties that involve being able to move and lift freely to perform necessary inspections and tasks, including climbing ladders and stairs.
This position will sometimes work within a wide range of temperatures (extreme hot and cold), in dusty, dirty, or confined areas or areas that may be quite noisy. This position will also work within close physical proximity to residents and other staff members.
This position may occasionally assist at other DOC worksites, but is not anticipated to travel on a regular basis. Most DOC positions occasionally travel for training, meetings, conferences, or similar events.

The Department of Corrections will conduct criminal background checks on applicants prior to selection. Upon hire, all new DOC employees are subject to fingerprinting.

Qualifications
Minimally qualified applicants for the Steamfitter position must meet at least one of the following requirements:
- Must have completed an apprenticeship approved by the Department of Workforce Development as a steamfitter.
OR
- Must have formal recognition of status as a steamfitter or equivalent title by an appropriate international or local trade organization or some type of similar formal validation of journey status may also be accepted.
OR
Such evidence may include letters or statements from past customers/clients and/or employers.
- Persons having informal training and experience equivalent to the formal apprenticeship and journey status may also be accepted upon submission of documented proof of such training and experience. Equivalent training and experience for this craft:
- Evidence of at least 8,000 hours of training and experience in all of the following work processes:
- installation of residential and apartment heating systems;
- installation of industrial and commercial heating, ventilation and refrigeration systems;
- installation and repair of power house systems;
- repair and servicing of all types of heating, refrigeration and air conditioning systems;
- installation and final testing of all types of refrigeration and air conditioning systems;
- installation and final adjustment of temperature controls; and
- completion of 500 hours of prescribed instruction.
