JOB TITLE: Academic Tutor – Independent Contractor (1099)

LOCATION: The Maples – Baton Rouge, Louisiana

SCHEDULE: Part-time, on-site

POSITION SUMMARY

The Maples in Baton Rouge is seeking 1–2 additional academic tutors to support adolescent girls in a residential behavioral health setting. Our goal is to help residents stay as current as possible with their schoolwork during their stay, reducing academic gaps and supporting their transition back to school at discharge.

Most residents are enrolled in four online classes, typically focused on core subjects. Some residents complete paper assignment packets provided by their schools. Tutors circulate throughout the classroom, providing individualized assistance, encouraging engagement, and helping residents complete their assigned work. A strong background in math and science is preferred.

SCHEDULE AND CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT

• School sessions take place Monday through Thursday, 3:30–5:30 p.m.
• Tutors typically provide services two days per week, totaling four hours.
• Specific service days will be coordinated with The Maples.
• One classroom accommodates a maximum of 12 residents. Ideally, two tutors are assigned to the room.
• Each session includes a 15-minute resident break. Tutors are encouraged to use this time to begin session notes and documentation.

Residents do not all require assistance at the same time or on the same day. Tutors circulate throughout the room and provide support according to individual needs.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide individualized academic assistance while circulating throughout the classroom.
• Assist residents with online classes, assignments, and school-provided paper packets.
• Explain academic concepts and help residents work through assignments, particularly in math and science.
• Encourage residents to stay on task and remain engaged during school time.
• Provide study strategies, organizational support, and practical tips for completing schoolwork.
• Monitor academic progress and communicate concerns or additional support needs to designated Maples staff.
• Record each resident’s progress, grades, and observed behaviors at the end of each school session.
• Distribute and collect classroom materials, including paper, markers, and other supplies.
• Maintain resident confidentiality, appropriate professional boundaries, and compliance with facility safety procedures.

Designated Maples staff coordinate educational arrangements with residents’ schools and guardians and maintain communication throughout each resident’s stay. Tutors support this process by sharing academic progress, observations, and concerns with designated staff.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Ability to explain core academic concepts clearly and assist with online coursework and paper assignments.
• Strong background or experience in math and science preferred.
• Experience in tutoring, teaching, classroom support, or assisting adolescents preferred.
• Certified teachers, college students, and non-certified tutors with appropriate academic skills are encouraged to apply.
• Patience, dependability, strong organizational skills, and a supportive communication style.
• Ability to work effectively with adolescent girls who may have emotional, behavioral, or learning-related needs.
• Ability to maintain professional boundaries and accurately document resident progress.
• Ability to complete applicable background screenings and contractor onboarding requirements.

COMPENSATION

• Certified teachers: $50\.00 per hour.
• College students and non-certified tutors: $25\.00–$30\.00 per hour.

ENGAGEMENT TYPE

This opportunity is offered as an independent contractor (1099) engagement. The final agreement will outline the scope of services, compensation, schedule, and applicable contractor obligations.
